The Catamarca Puna is an open-air volcanism museum. One of its main attractions is the Campo de Piedra Pómez, a strange and dazzling landscape carved into the rock that gives rise to its name: La Pómez, of purely igneous origin and that is produced from an imposing explosion of the stratum-volcanic building Geologically known as the Plinian type, this explosion is so shocking that if you could see it, it would resemble a fungus produced by a bomb. The column that in the worst case perforates the atmosphere, distributes the ashes and slags in extensive areas and in different directions that, when cooled, give rise to this wonderful rock with special characteristics, with a large number of holes produced by the escape of gases during the cooling stage, this degassing phenomenon is what makes it extremely light and very easy to carve by the Puneños winds, known arid and abrasive winds that move freely through this region where they become the best and most prominent in their wake. sculptors of the Andean rock. This strange landscape of white labyrinths and climbing dunes is located a few kilometers to the west, along a track that we will travel, where the path continues through some sandy areas that could be described as the dream of the explorer, of Overlanding adventurers and of traction in all four wheels. On the way we will pass very close to a young volcano: the Carachi Pampa, painted entirely black due to the spillage of its basalt flows in ancient geological times.
